Wednesday Double Shot Surf Report

With the wind showing up for my lunch time surf breaks, I thought it might be a good idea to try a dawn patrol session today. To make a long story short, it was the best surf in weeks, and I made the most of it. The water was like sheet glass, with peaks jacking up and offering shoulders to rip on, with lots of speed. Damn, that was great!

Lunch was windy, choppy, mixed up, etc. After the morning session, it was definitely a let down. However, this is the norm here during spring, so perhaps more morning sessions will be on tap for me.

Tuesday Afternoon Surf Report

After being out of the water for almost one week, I was going surfing no matter what the conditions were. And today, they were small and junky, with a bit of wind added in for good measure. I made the best of the marginal conditions and had a good time getting back in the water again. It also looks like we'll be getting a bit of swell over the next few days.

Tuesday Afternoon Surf Report

I almost decided to not go surfing today, due in large part to the cloudy, blustery weather we experienced yesterday. However, when 12:30 rolled around, I looked outside and the sun was burning through some low clouds. The wind was similarly low, and so I grabbed my CI single fin, and hoped for the best.

The waves were small (in the 3 foot range), but there were some nice shoulders to ride on, and I had three of the best waves I've had in a while. I'm damn glad I did go out, that is for sure. It looks like the conditions for the next few days will be the same, with a nice and juicy pulse (6 to 9 feet) coming in over the weekend from almost due west - perfect for North County! Keep your fingers crossed...

Tuesday Lunch Break Surf Report

Driving into work today, I went along the 101 and saw some very nice looking waves breaking all along North Country. While kicking myself for not getting out on a Dawn Patrol, I hoped that the waves and conditions would remain consisten, at least through my lunch.

Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. The wind kicked up, and the tide was changing during my lunch break surf, resulting in extremely choppy and mixed up waves. It appears as if we may be getting a nice little bump in the South swell near the end of the week, but it may be coming along with some inclement weather as well. d'oh!

The Woo-Hoo! Monday Surf Report

Today, the conditions (as one might guess from the title) were extremely clean and glassy, with very little wind. The swell has backed off a bit from yesterday, but the set waves were still about shoulder high, with nice peaks peeling off long shoulders and fun rides. Let's hope these conditions hold or improve over the week!

Here are a few pictures of me from today's lunch:

Thursday Offshore Surf Report

Chest high sets + offshoe winds = fun surf! Mix in some exceptionally beautiful weather, and I can't think of a better way to spend my lunch hour. It felt great to get back in the water again after taking voer a week off due to rain, winds, and a trip to Disneyland. I'm planning on heading out tomorrow morning for a dawn patrol session, and hoping that the conditions hold!

Good Friday Surf Report

Well, another week and another set of storm clouds has passed over North San Diego county, dumping just enough rain to totally muck up the water for the next 72 hours or so. Well hell, at least it is a beautiful day out, and those clouds are gone from the horizon for the time being.

Thankfully, there isn't much swell in the water today, and it doesn't look like the situation will improve muc until Monday, when I'll be back in the H2O again! For those of you more adventurous and daring, the afternoons and evening over Easter weekend may see some wind swell, so you might get lucky.

Happy Easter, and see you all next week!

Thursday Afternoon Surf Report

I have surfed the last four days in a row, and am slowly getting back into shape after the weeks of no surf due to rain, run-off, etc. The week started out with some fairly good sized surf, with set wave heights in the head high range. As the week progressed, a rare pulse of swell activity visited us from the southwest, doing wonders for the beach breaks here in Encinitas. Tuesday and Wednesday saw some of the nicest, peeling waves at the beach since last summer, and combined with the amazing weather we had, brought out a few more surfers than average.

Today, the swell has dropped significantly and looks like it will continue to do so until the weekend, when there is a good chance that San Diego will be visited by rain again. This is unfortunate as it also looks like another nice southwest pulse will be coming in on Sunday and Monday, so I'll cross my fingers for no rain.

Tuesday Surf Report

Took my single fin out today on my lunch break surf for a change of pace, and hopefully a change of luck as well. Bingo! The waves were around chest high, with sets rolling in around shoulder to head high. Took off on a couple nice rides, and loved the carving feel of the board. Near the end of lunch, a huge cleanup set rolled through and gave my sinuses a thorough rinsing. Best lunch break surf session in a while!

The next few days, a large swell should be hitting our beaches, so take some time and enjoy the show. I hope to snap a few pictures if the swell hype doesn't kill it before it arrives.

Tuesday Afternoon Surf Report

I got back in the water today, knowing full well that this would probably be the only chance I had to surf this week since another bout of rain is making its way to our shores as I type.

So how was? Small, but clean and relatively wind-free. After several days out of the water, it was just nice to get back in and catch a few small waves, paddle around, etc. Definately better than a kick in the nuts, as we say...

Tuesday Afternoon Surf Report

The surf has been fairly good in the last week or two, with some truly large swells rolling through the lineup last week. Today, the swell picked up a bit due to the storm about to move into San Diego. However, the surface was still nice and glassy, with only moderate onshore winds. As mentioned, it is supposed to rain as early as tonight and into tomorrow, so it looks as if I'll be out of the water for a few days... again! Let's hope it isn't as long as the last interlude...

Surfs-a-Thumping Surf Report

We have seen a large spike in swell size here in San Diego today. Today, I went down to my beach break and watched a friend get continually drilled by set waves, and picking off more decent sized waves as they appeared. I'll post some pictures up tomorrow, but the wave sizes were easilly overhead + on the set waves - probably in the 8 to 9 foot range! Unfortunately, most of the beach breaks here can't really handle that size, and so close outs are the norm. However, every once in a while a nice shoulder will form and the opportune surfer can score a nice ride.

From all indications, it appears that Friday and maybe Saturday could see some HUGE surf - in the double overhead range! That will certainly be a day to go and watch the awesome power of mother nature...

After the Storm Surf Report

As seems to be the norm the last few weekends here in North San Diego County, the weekend brough with it a good does of rain over Saturday and Sunday. While this didn't stop the Chargers from beating the Denver Broncos on Sunday, it did prevent me from surfing over the weekend, and due to the run-off, for the next three days.

And right on cue, a nice swell arrived this morning and with it some very nice offshore winds. Driving in to work this morning along the 101, I saw several overhead sized, spitting barrels go unridden. What a waste! I stopped to take a few pictures on my way into work and should have them up later in the day. What torture! Arggggggg.

Long Time No Update Surf Report

My only excuse for the lack of updates as of late is that sickness has swept through our house, nailing all three of our children, plus both parents. Yes, my life is truly envious at times...

Anyhow, I'm feling good enough to go to work, so that means I'm feeling good enough to surf! Today I went out on a dawn patrol session which was beautiful but lacking in surf. I was the first person in the water, and it remained that way for a blissful 20 minutes or so.

At lunch, I went out again hoping that the change in tide and local wind swell may produce better conditions than those found this morning. I was right, and had a very nice lunch time surf break. The waves weren't big, but they were peeling and coming in non-stop. Top that off with your typical gorgeous southern California day, and I wouldn't rather spend my lunches any other way.

Election Day Surf Report

After being out of the water for two weeks due to the first rain in San Diego county for over 180 days (and hence the bacteria laden run-off which streams into the ocean), it was great getting back into the water yesterday and today. The waves were small but glassy today, with the water crystal clear. There are a ton of fish in the lineup, and the pelicans are enjoying them immensely. The water temperature has definately dropped a bit over the last two weeks, but with the sun out in the afternoon it is still comfortable in a spring suit.

It looks as if Southern California could get a nice NW swell on Thursday, so keep your fingers crossed!

Thursday Afternoon Surf Report

I haven't said much about the surf as of late, mostly because it has been pathetic. Today is was slightly better, as conditions were merely wimpy. However, from the swell forecasts I've looked at, it appears as if we should see some good sized surf from the South on Friday, and then a big swell from the Northwest will rear it's head for the weekend, with it backing off through Monday. Let's hope we get some of both swells here in the North County.

Swell is a' Dropping Surf Report

Monday saw a large South swell hit our beaches. Driving into work that morning, I nearly choked on the sight of spitting barrels at a local spot which picks up Souths particularly well. The breeze was blowing offshore, and I held my hopes up for the lunch break surf. Unfortunately, about 30 minutes before I went out, the wind started howling onshore, knocking the waves down and churning up the chop. What an amazing bummer!

Today, the conditions were cleaner, however the swell is dropping quickly. Looking at the forecasts, it doesn't appear as if we'll be seeing anything of significant size for the remainder of the week, so maybe you should plan on taking out your small wave board over the next few days. And with all the wind we've had, the water temperature has dropped a few degrees to the 69-70 range, I'd guess. Still trunkable, but noticably cooler than the weekend.

Thursday Afternoon Surf Report

(Subtitled, “Look at me! Look at me!”)

Driving into work today, I was kicking myself for not getting up early for a dawn patrol session, as the waves looked very nice. At work, I kept up hope that the winds would stay somewhat calm for my lunch session, and luck was with me today.

Today, the set waves were overhead, with shoulders present some of the time. It wasn't super consistent, but it was very fun. This swell is supposed to stick around and potentially increase tomorrow, and we are looking at another swell coming in early next week! Woo-hoo!

Bob, who is out of the water due to a knee injury, took my camera down to the water and was nice enough to snap a few pictures of me...

Taking off on a small left:

Speeding down the line, backside:

Here is a short little sequence of three pictures:

Unfortunately, Bob left before my wave of the day rolled through, but oh well! Luckilly, he also missed two of my major wipeouts ;> . I had a blast out there...

Thursday Afternoon Surf Report

There isn't too much swell in the water here in North San Diego county, over the last few days. Monday saw the best waves as remnants of hurricane Howard (off the coast of Baja) made their way to our beaches, but since then the well has gone dry.

We're off camping for the next few days at a local beach campground. Hopefully, I'll get in plenty of surfing, rest, and relaxation with the family. I should have some pictures when I get back...

Hump Day Surf Report

Tuesday morning was my first dawn patrol session in quite a while, and it felt nice to get out in the water before work. The days are getting shorter, so until Daylight Savings Time kicks in, the AM sessions will get darker and darker. The waves were a bit inconsistent that morning, and I was assaulted by a rather large sardine near the end of the session.

These last few days have produced some small, but fun surf. Tomorrow, a swell from the Northwest should begin to show, peaking Friday morning. I hear the dawn patrol calling!
