SCEX Updater-Another Innovation from the Sherman Team
We are very pleased to introduce the latest innovation from the team at
Sherman & Associates, for our Loan Origination Software partners, the
SCEX_Updater. Installing your clients with SCEX calculation engine
updates just got easier...
...much easier.
The online updater provides a seamless process for your clients to receive
the latest updates of the SCEX calculation engine. When you integrate our
SCEX_Updater into your LOS application, your clients will be empowered with the
ability to update the SCEX portion of their software directly from their
place of business. Only an email is required to alert the client of the new
version. This minimal-touch approach frees you from the hassle of monitoring
and managing all of your installed clients' engines.
For example, your client receives an email notification of a quarterly SCEX
Update. If your client chooses to install the update, he follows the instructions,
going to our website, clicking on the SCEX_Updater button, and seeing the above screen.
Clicking "Yes" causes the SCEX_Updater to download the newest SCEX from the
designated server. If the updater was installed in the same directory as the active engine, restarting your system will have the new updater fully installed with the old engine safely backed up.
That's all there is to it! Your client is then ready to
go with the new engine.
It's that easy!
To learn more about the SCEX_Updater or updates to our other products, WinLoan-32 and eWinLoan,
contact our Sales Department via email or by phone at 800.776.6651.

SCEX IS NOW AVAILABLE ON LINUX
The Sherman programming team has been busy again! Our consumer loan calculation engine, the powerhouse SCEX, can now be run on the popular open source platform, Linux. While Windows may own a large majority of the desktop market, more and more application providers are using back-end systems powered by Linux due to its robust and easily accessible nature.
The Windows version of the SCEX provides a Loan Server Service which allows any system capable of communicating via TCP/IP to harness the power of the SCEX. But some developers may want to completely remove the need for any Windows
boxes from their solution. Our programming team decided it was time to address this segment of the marketplace, thereby increasing SCEX versatility. Now those developers who want to completely remove the need for any Windows boxes from their solution can do so using Linux with our SCEX.
It is with great pleasure that Sherman and Associates announces that in addition to Windows, the SCEX is now available for the Intel x86 (32 bit) and Amd64/x86_64 (64 bit) Linux platforms. If you use either of these two platforms, you may now access the SCEX directly.
If you are interested in using the SCEX for your application on these or any other platform, please contact our sales team at sales@shermanloan.com or at
1.800.776.6651. We provide demo versions with sample code and documentation for prospective partners, which ensure lightning-fast delivery and usage.

NEW SCEX ENHANCEMENTS
Our Sherman Calculation Engine with XML interface (SCEX), already the industry standard,
continues to expand at our customers' requests. The SCEX has become the calculation engine of
choice for Loan Origination Software (LOS) providers across the country, as well as financial institutions
seeking to develop their own platform systems.
These WinLoan-32 screens are examples of new SCEX features.
|
Two of the most significant recent enhancements expand the usefulness of the SCEX beyond the
direct lending areas:
- The Availability of Individual Retirement Annuity (IRA) and
|
|
- The addition of Dealer Reserve calculations to Auto Loans.
|
On the direct lending side, the following enhancements have been completed:
- Three new odd days prepaid types have been added, based upon the interest accrual method in force.
- Principal Plus Interest Loans (constant amount to principal payments mixed with interest only payments) now
allow for the inclusion of skipped payments within that loan structure.
- We have added Interest Only payments to loans with interest rates that
increment during the loan term such as Adjustable Rate Mortgage Loans.
- Student Loans consisting of Full Deferment Periods followed by immediate repayment schedules are now supported.
In addition to the general enhancements cited above, there have also been numerous client-specific enhancements. Most of these modifications fall in the area of
credit insurance/debt protection, as needed by individual clients.
Lending clients accessing our SCEX, whether directly in their own platform systems or through the origination systems provided by our LOS partners, range from small
community banks and credit unions to some of the largest bank holding companies and student loan providers in the country. Our support of this diversity of lenders
and their needs keeps the SCEX and our end-user software systems at the pinnacle of loan calculation systems.
The SCEX has made the job of loan calculation much easier and more profitable for many.
Please give us a call at (800) 776-6651 to discuss your needs, or email us at sales@shermanloan.com

NEW LOAN TYPE TABS FOR WINLOAN-32 SOFTWARE
WinLoan-32's new tabs—CONSUMER, COMMERCIAL, MORTGAGE—allow users to switch
types of loans without jumping to change setups. The following scenario explains the
usefulness of the new loan type tabs.
Previously with WinLoan-32, suppose a loan officer computed a consumer loan, such as an
auto loan, and his next customer was interested in a mortgage loan. If the mortgage loan
used different setup parameters, he had to go into the Setup Files, then the Account Setup,
and select the Account corresponding to mortgage loans. That's several clicks! The loan
officer would then need to switch back for consumer loans. If these different loan structures
have different setup files, forgetting to switch would lead to incorrect results.
In our latest update we have added separate tabs for consumer, commercial, and mortgage
loans, and each tab has the complete Setup File for its specific loan type. Now, even if the
setup parameters differ among these loan types, a single click on the desired tab moves you
from one to the other. The new tabs not only speed the operation, but they also eliminate a
potential source of error.
NEW CALCULATIONS FOR WINLOAN-32
Since WinLoan-32 and eWinLoan are both based upon the SCE (Sherman Calculation
Engine), which has become the preferred source of loan quotations and disclosures among
the major Loan Origination Software providers, we are continually making enhancements for
our LOS partners' clients that wind up in our WinLoan products as well. Some recent
enhancements include:
- Setup file options for minimum calculated fee values.
- Addition of 50-year mortgage loans for all payment frequencies other than weekly.
- Addition of 365/365 simple and U.S. Rule accrual methods (like Actual/365 except
that February 29 is ignored).
- New capping method for MOB Gross disability aggregate cap.
These are just some of the recent enhancements we have made. All of our products are continually expanding in capability, and therefore
always on the cutting edge because we are constantly responding to the needs of new lenders accessing our SCEX. Thanks to our growing list
of LOS partners, we have added over 100 new lenders this year alone.
Please email us or call John Sherman at (800) 776-6651 to discuss how the SCEX, or our WinLoan
software, can benefit your organization.

FOUR NEW ENHANCEMENTS TO THE SCEX
We find that the frequency of enhancements made to the engine is accelerating as we add more and more new users.
Most enhancements are specific to a particular calculation
required by a single lender or credit insurance carrier, but
sometimes they are extensions of capability in loan structures,
and of interest to most of our users.
We think that is the case here, and so what follows deserves to be included in “What’s New”.
1. Interest Start Date
By popular demand, the SCEX, WinLoan-32, and eWinLoan will soon have the ability to specify an interest start date which falls between the loan date and the date of first payment, inclusively.
This new entry allows the correct computation of loans such as "90 days interest free", and other similar promotions. These interest free days have a tricky interaction with the rules for computing the Regulation Z APR,
which depend upon when APR affecting fees are earned. Our products
handle the calculation automatically.
2. More Irregular Loan Flexibility
The irregular loan functionality provided in the SCEX is the most
powerful and flexible on the market. The simple case of summer skips
(skipping payments made in June, July, and August) is easily handled,
as are irregular and/or pickup payment loans.
Our current version allows specifying the amounts of annually recurring payments, or specifying a particular month/year for a skipped or irregular
amount.
Some of our customers have requested even more flexibility, which
will be showcased in the July update.
In addition to being able to just specify the month, or month/year,
users may now specify the payment number.
This allows specification of the first, last, or any given payment to
be an irregular payment without having to figure out the month and
year in which the payment falls.
To save time in entries, users may now specify that a given irregular
payment amount should be set for all payments, unless over-ridden by
specific irregular payments. Since at least
one payment must be computed, we have also added the ability to specify a given payment as the one to be computed.
Combining these new features allows our partners to extend our normal
balloon loan capabilities, such as specify regular payment, calculate
balloon, or specify final balloon and calculate regular payment, to
loans with skipped and irregular payments as well.
As an example, consider a 36-month loan for $10,000. To compute a
balloon loan with summer skips and a final payment of $2,500, we would
do the following:
(1) Tell the engine to skip all June, July, and August payments.
(2) Tell the engine to set the 36th payment to $2,500.
(3) Tell the engine to compute the loan
(i.e. find the regular payment amount.)
Similarly, if we wanted to compute the same loan, but with a specified
regular payment of $200, then we would do the following:
(1) Specify that all payments are $200.
(2) Tell the engine to skip all June, July, and August payments.
(3) Specify that the 36th payment should be computed.
3. Actual / Actual interest accrual calendar tweak
Whether a lender accrues daily interest at the beginning or end of a 24-hour period can affect the
interest calculation in crossing from a non-leap into a leap year, and
conversely.
This change allows lenders
the option of when that accrual occurs.
4. New samples included
with the SCEX Account Tester
We have included sample
XML inputs and outputs with the SCEX Account Tester installation, so that you
will have a set of tests to work with as you learn how to use the Account
Tester (See “What’s New” for March to read a discussion of the Account Tester).
The samples included are those found in the SCEX Reference Manual, and we have
intentionally created one difference in one of the XML outputs, as well as not
included one of the XML outputs so you can see what happens when differences
are detected or new outputs created. (Located in the Samples directory where
the Account Tester is installed).

NEW SCEX ACCOUNT TESTER
It all begins with an idea:
As the number of loan origination software providers using our SCEX has grown,
so has the number of new lenders relying on SCEX calculations each month.
This, in turn, means more SCEX enhancements as we encounter situations that
require adding a new calculation path to precisely match a client's numbers.
We developed a set of tools for our own internal use to aid in the testing of
these additions that automatically re-computes hundreds of loans and identifies
any that have changed. One of our senior programmers suggested that this could be
modified to be a very useful tool for our partners as well. After a series of team
meetings, our developers refined the tools and bundled them into the SCEX Account Tester.
Thanks to Scott for his excellent idea.
Here's what it can do for you:
The SCEX Account Tester streamlines regression testing of the SCEX releases. Instead of
manually going through a set of samples for each release, this new application automates
the re-testing process. IT CAN LITERALLY REDUCE DAYS OF RE-TESTING TO MINUTES!
Since the SCEX is backward compatible, it is not necessary for a partner to install a new release
unless there is the need or desire for any of the changes.
The SCEX Account Tester will prove invaluable in that event.
It's due out in April:
The SCEX Account Tester gives our developers a greater peace of mind, knowing that each release
has passed the testing of numerous account samples we put through a newly released engine. Now
our partners will enjoy the same benefits. It will be included in our next quarterly SCEX update
at the beginning of April. If you have any questions about the SCEX Account Tester, send them to
sales@shermanloan.com.

Our newly redesigned eWinLoan is now finished and ready for delivery.
eWinLoan, Sherman and Associates' Internet loan quotation system, is built on the industry
standard Sherman Calculation Engine (SCE). The SCE is the choice of loan origination software
providers throughout the industry. Why settle for anything less powerful or flexible in your loan
quotation software?
Earlier this year, the Sherman development team decided to upgrade our flagship Internet loan quotation
software using modern web application design and client based scripting languages. The goal was to
make eWinLoan look and feel more like a standard desktop application. Working with input from several
of our customers, we believe that we have succeeded.
eWinLoan has been developed with the following two target groups firmly in mind: credit insurance
companies and banks wanting to offer a thin client, platform-independent loan quotation tool over a wide
area network.
For Credit Insurance Companies, eWinLoan offers one flexible loan quotation tool that your clients
throughout the country can use. All of your client's specific settings are stored in individual setup files
customized for each client alone. Every client’s setup file produces loans matching their interest
accrual method and loan structures, all the while supporting your insurance or debt protection products.
Clients are then able to quote loans and print disclosures, amortization schedules, and insurance
certificates. When a change is required for a particular state or product, Sherman and Associates will
send new setup files to you – your clients will have to do absolutely nothing!
For Banks, eWinLoan offers a platform-independent, thin client solution. Your information services
team simply installs eWinLoan on one Windows IIS server, and all of your loan officers are then able to
quote loans, print out disclosures and amortization schedules, and use the full functionality of the
software. Should insurance rates or loan parameters change, the setup files (maintained by Sherman and
Associates) need only to be updated in a single location.
To work with a demo version of the upgraded eWinLoan,
click here. Once you are there
you'll see we offer two accounts to sample: Bank One with Debt Protection and Bank Two with Credit Insurance.
Also, notice our surfing beach across the top of the screen. This area can be customized with your own
graphics/logo. Please note that the demo version is fully functional, with the exception that the
interest rate is fixed at 10.123%. *
For more details or to discuss pricing, please email us at
sales@shermanloan.com, or give John Sherman a call at (800) 776-6651.
* Demo Version Restrictions: 1) Loan interest rates are fixed at 10.123,
2) Roll to rate requests are returned as equal payment loans w/ rate=10.123, 3) Refunds have
all input premiums fixed at $1,000, 4) IRA & CD rates fixed at 10.123

Thinking of outsourcing your lending calculation needs? Sherman and Associates and our
Sherman Calculation Engine with XML interface (SCEX) can save you a significant amount of
time and money. As the preeminent experts in the mathematics of lending, we warrant that our
software will always be accurate, compliant, and the most robust available on the market.
Numerous companies have already discovered that our SCEX is the solution to their lending
software needs.
The integration of a third party system is often viewed as a more challenging task than it actually
is. XML is widely considered to be a simple, flexible text format. We've now taken the next step
to show you and your developers, VISUALLY, just how easy it can be. On our new
SCEX Demo page, you'll find real time examples of input
and output files used during communication with the SCEX. We've even included the option to input
your own loan prompts and view the resulting files. You'll be amazed at just how simple we've made it.
If you offer loan origination software to the lending market, and your clients demand totally
accurate calculations for all of their loan structures, insurance, and debt protection
calculations, incorporating the SCEX into your software can be the most cost-effective solution you
can find. Give us a call at 1-800-776-6651 to discuss this and the other benefits you will receive by

CHECK OUT THE LATEST ENHANCEMENTS TO THE SCEX (SHERMAN CALCULATION ENGINE WITH XML INTERFACE)
Actually, there's quite a bit that's new to report. We are continually enhancing the SCEX (Sherman
Calculation Engine with XML Interface). Our partners, who employ the SCEX to provide the loan
calculation portion of their software, are usually the first to experience the expanded capabilities.
Their clients, through requests for specific calculations to precisely match their back-end systems,
are the primary sources for these enhancements. A specific request may come from just one lender,
but all users of our engine benefit, as new versions of the engine are sent to all
partners.
While the SCEX is recognized as the most robust loan calculation engine available, there is no such thing
as software that will always match the virtually infinite number of calculation methods employed across all
lenders. Consequently, enhancements are an everyday part of support we provide, enabling our partners to
promise that their origination software will precisely match their clients' internal systems.
So, we thought we'd share with all of you some of the enhancements we have made to the SCEX in just the
past few months.
- ARM loans - We've added new interest accrual methods, more options on "odd days", and irregular
final payments.
- Irregular loan schedules - Our programmers have added the option for interest-only payments to
precede irregular payments within the same loan.
- Construction loan calculations - Additional options including interest accrual methods, odd days
treatment, allowed loan terms, and others have been added.
- Balloon loans in the "Canadian Rollover" category - Another method for balloon loans defined by
long-term amortization with short-term call is now included.
- There is a new payment rounding option based on best amortization.
- APR calculations and MOB calculations - These both have additional setup options now.
- New development tool - An additional development tool to aid our partners in testing engine results is
now included.
If you offer origination software to the lending market, and your clients demand totally accurate calculations
for all their loan structures and debt protection calculations, incorporating the SCEX into your
software can be the most cost-effective solution you can find. Give us a call at
1-800-776-6651 to discuss further.

CONSTRUCTION LOANS NOW AVAILABLE IN SCE AND WINLOAN PRODUCTS
As the provider of the most robust and complete loan quotation software available, we're once
again lengthening our lead on the competition.
At the request of one of our strategic software partners, we've added construction loan
capabilities to our Sherman Calculation Engine (SCE), broadening the already wide scope of
loan structures offered. Because the SCE is the calculation heart of our
WinLoan-32 and eWinLoan, these new
construction loan types also become available to everyone using eWinLoan and WinLoan-32. Of course,
the loan calculations are in compliance with the special construction loan disclosure requirements
set forth in Regulation Z.
By using a "shared engine" type of structure in our products, when we make an upgrade for one customer we are
able to offer it to all other users of those programs.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF PARTNERSHIP WITH IAC
We are very pleased to announce a new partnership with one of our long time customers,
Individual Assurance Company (IAC). Our Sherman Calculation Engine with XML interface,(SCEX),
will now supply all of the loan, insurance, and debt protection calculations for IAC's new
software. The IAC software will work beside lenders' systems to promote and process the sale
of credit insurance, whether Single Premium or Monthly and debt protection products. From
the initial quote, through the monthly collection, reconciliation, and reporting processes,
the IAC software will help generate increased fee income for lenders. With our SCEX at the front
end of the IAC software, IAC's clients are assured of accurate calculations and disclosures for
all of their loan, insurance, and debt protection products.
IAC has been an excellent Sherman customer for many years. Originally we supplied handheld computers,
programmed with IAC's credit insurance methods, to many of their accounts. As more of their lenders
acquired PC's, IAC began providing our WinLoan-16 software, then migrated to the later generation
WinLoan-32 and eWinLoan products, always assuring that their clients would have the finest sales
tools with guaranteed accuracy and compliance in all quotations and disclosures. The new IAC software
offers a complete marketing solution to their clients, for both monthly pay insurance and debt
protection products. We are honored and pleased that IAC's confidence in Sherman and Associates has
resulted in this new partnership.
If you are considering, or even already, providing loan origination software to your customer base,
Sherman and Associates can free you from the constant modifications that credit insurance and

XML INTERFACE ADDED TO THE SCE
The heart of both our WinLoan-32 and eWinLoan programs, the Sherman Calculation Engine
(SCE), contains essentially all consumer, commercial, and mortgage loan structures, as well
as the credit insurance and debt protection methods used in all fifty states. As many of the
nation's largest financial institutions and software companies have already discovered, our SCE is
the perfect solution to incorporate Sherman expertise in the mathematics of lending into your
own software systems.
With the addition of the XML interface, a system accessing the SCE no longer needs to be on a
Windows platform. The full power of the SCE is now available for all platforms implementing
a TCP/IP protocol. That's right, by taking advantage of the power and flexibility of XML, the
same compliant and accurate results you've come to expect from Sherman and Associates can be
seamlessly incorporated into your own system.

MOVING TO DEBT PROTECTION; IT STILL HAS TO BE SOLD!
When you think about moving from credit insurance to debt
protection products, we want you to think about us. Sherman
and Associates has already helped many major lenders implement
this change, and we stand ready to help you, too.
We've added a significant number of new MOB and Debt
Protection methods to the functionality of our WinLoan-32,
eWinLoan, and Calculation Engines.
Some of the debt protection calculations being implemented
are very simple, for example nothing more than a percentage
addition to the principal plus interest loan payment. For this
reason, some lenders are thinking that they can program the
new method themselves. But we must remember that debt
protection, like credit insurance, is voluntarily purchased by
the borrower. In other words, it must be sold. From our
very first loan quotation product through our most recent,
Sherman and Associates has always been guided by two rules in
the development of our software.
- We will match our lenders' systems, to the penny, for
all the loan structures they offer.
- We will provide the finest sales tool available, to help
maximize our lenders' fee income.
The better the sales tool used by your loan officers, the more debt
protection products will be sold. So, if you are a lender
contemplating a switch to debt protection, or an administrator
preparing to help a lender with such a change, the WinLoan
family of quotation products can help you achieve the maximum
possible profitability with the fewest hassles.
